The Nairobi Hospital Reaffirms Financial Strength and Commitment to Quality Care

By Fride Amiani

The Nairobi Hospital has reaffirmed its financial stability, governance reforms, and commitment to delivering high-quality healthcare amid recent public speculation over its operations.

Speaking at a joint press conference of the Board of Management and the Board of Trustees on Monday, hospital leadership sought to dispel concerns raised after a creditor, Opticom Kenya Ltd, filed a petition in court. The hospital emphasised that the matter was a legal process currently being contested while constructive dialogue continues toward resolution. Officials assured the public that the hospital’s operations remain intact, with staff salaries, supplier obligations, and infrastructure investments being met without disruption.

Chief Executive Officer Mr. Felix Osano underscored the hospital’s robust financial position by highlighting a series of infrastructure upgrades worth KSh 1.5 billion. He noted that these projects were entirely funded from internally generated revenues without reliance on external borrowing.

Among the investments are six state-of-the-art labour and delivery suites designed to enhance maternal and neonatal care, a 256-slice AI-enabled CT scanner that delivers faster and safer imaging, and a Cardiac Centre equipped with East and Central Africa’s first biplane catheterisation laboratory in a laminar flow theatre suite.

“Our continuing modernisation programme has benefitted from KSh 1.5 billion in infrastructure upgrades funded entirely from internally generated revenues, with no loans – clear evidence of prudent financial stewardship,” said Mr. Osano.

“Each of these projects is a strategic investment to expand clinical capacity, improve patient outcomes, and reinforce the hospital’s leadership in specialised care.”

The CEO also addressed concerns surrounding a tariff adjustment introduced in July 2025. The hospital had increased charges by an average of five percent after a comprehensive cost analysis and benchmarking exercise, prompting some insurance providers to suspend services.

Following a series of engagements, the hospital rescinded the tariff changes, reverting to pre-adjustment rates while discussions with insurers continue. According to Mr. Osano, the decision reflected Nairobi Hospital’s patient-first approach.

“This was a decision reached in mutual goodwill, and driven by commitment to responsible engagement that prioritises patients while sustaining quality care,” he said.

Beyond financial and operational matters, the hospital leadership also emphasized governance reforms.

Chairman of the Board of Trustees Dr. Barcley Onyambu acknowledged that some decisions by past boards had exposed the institution to financial and reputational risks. However, he assured stakeholders that the current leadership was united in ensuring accountability, prudent decision-making, and transparent governance. He welcomed the recent lifting of court-imposed restrictions that had limited some hospital operations and described the move as a pivotal moment for the institution.

“This is more than a legal victory, it is a turning point that demonstrates our stability, reinforces our capacity to deliver on our long-term mission,” said Dr. Onyambu.

He added that the lifting of restrictions would enable the hospital to proceed with critical infrastructure and equipment investments aimed at strengthening its leadership in specialised healthcare.

The Nairobi Hospital’s reassurance comes at a time when healthcare institutions across the country face growing financial and operational pressures. Rising costs, insurance disputes, and public scrutiny have tested the resilience of private and public hospitals alike. By highlighting its financial prudence, investment in modern technology, and governance reforms, Nairobi Hospital sought to reinforce its position as a leading healthcare provider in the region.

Hospital executives concluded the briefing by reaffirming the institution’s guiding principles of transparency, unity of purpose, and commitment to patient-centered care. They noted that the ongoing modernization projects are not merely physical upgrades but strategic investments intended to secure the hospital’s future and enhance its service delivery.

The Nairobi Hospital remains one of the country’s most trusted medical institutions, with a long history of pioneering healthcare services. Its leadership stressed that continued collaboration with stakeholders, patients, and partners will be key in sustaining that legacy.

By committing to prudent financial management, investing in advanced clinical infrastructure, and reinforcing governance structures, the hospital expressed confidence in its ability to overcome current challenges and maintain its mission of delivering healthcare with a difference.
