Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) has announced a major expansion of its renewable energy development pipeline to 5,500 megawatts (MW) while unveiling its inaugural Sustainability Report, signalling a renewed commitment to clean energy, transparency and responsible business practices.

Speaking during the launch at Karura Forest in Nairobi on Monday, KenGen Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Eng. Peter Njenga said the report marks a significant milestone in the company's history, describing it as both a strategic recalibration of its long-term growth ambitions and a public commitment to accountability.

"This report is more than a corporate publication. It is a public commitment to transparency, accountability and responsible business," Njenga said, adding that it demonstrates how the company creates value for shareholders while protecting the environment, supporting communities and contributing to Kenya's sustainable economic transformation.

Njenga said sustainability has become an integral part of KenGen's operations, influencing investment decisions, risk management, stakeholder engagement and long-term resilience. He noted that the report provides stakeholders with a transparent framework for tracking the company's environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance for the 2024/25 financial year.

According to the report, renewable energy accounted for 94.4 per cent of KenGen's electricity dispatch during the reporting period, while its operations generated 6.9 million carbon credits. The company also continued environmental restoration through tree planting and landscape rehabilitation, alongside investments in education, clean water access and local enterprise development.

Njenga said the achievements demonstrate that sustainable development and business growth are mutually reinforcing.

"These achievements reinforce our belief that business growth and sustainability must go hand in hand," he said.

He observed that after more than seven decades of powering Kenya's development, KenGen is positioning itself for the future by investing in energy solutions that will support industrialisation, create jobs, attract investment and strengthen regional energy security.

Looking ahead, the CEO announced that the company is raising its renewable energy development target to 5,500MW in response to emerging investment opportunities, the changing energy landscape and Kenya's evolving development priorities.

He said the enhanced growth strategy reflects confidence in the country's clean energy future and will strengthen KenGen's role in supporting Kenya's industrialisation agenda while positioning the country as a regional green energy hub.

Njenga reaffirmed the company's commitment to operating responsibly and creating shared value for government, investors, development partners, communities and other stakeholders. He also urged stakeholders to engage with the Sustainability Report and hold the company accountable as it works towards accelerating Kenya's transition to a clean, resilient and prosperous energy future.
