KIFWA Rolls Out Digital Marine Cargo Insurance Platform Ahead of Mandatory Compliance
By Fride Amiani
The Kenya International Freight and Warehousing Association (KIFWA), in partnership with leading insurance firms and technology providers, has officially launched the Digital Marine Cargo Insurance (DMCI) Platform ahead of the mandatory enforcement of Marine Cargo Insurance requirements set to take effect on July 1, 2026.
The new platform is expected to streamline the issuance of Marine Cargo Insurance certificates by providing a fully digital, secure and compliant system integrated with key government services and payment channels. The rollout comes as importers, clearing and forwarding agents prepare to comply with the new insurance regulations.
According to KIFWA, the platform has been developed in collaboration with APA General Insurance, Britam General Insurance, CIC General Insurance, Old Mutual General Insurance, Pacis Insurance, Dynamique and eCitizen. It is integrated with payment gateways including eCitizen, the Kenya Revenue Authority's Integrated Customs Management System (ICMS), M-Pesa and participating banking institutions to simplify premium payments and certificate verification.
The association said the platform will enable instant issuance of digital insurance certificates, real-time payment verification and faster cargo clearance through automated processing. It is also expected to enhance transparency, improve service delivery and ensure compliance with the new Marine Cargo Insurance framework.
To prepare stakeholders for the transition, KIFWA and its partners have already conducted nationwide sensitisation and training programmes in Nairobi, Mombasa, Malaba, Busia, Namanga and Isebania. The training covers platform access, certificate issuance, premium payment procedures, integration with customs clearance processes, claims reporting and customer support.
KIFWA said the training programme will continue over the next 12 months to support clearing and forwarding agents and other industry players as they adapt to the digital system.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to providing continuous technical support and working closely with its insurance partners to ensure a smooth implementation of the new framework. It also urged all its members to adopt the Digital Marine Cargo Insurance Platform to facilitate uninterrupted cargo clearance once the mandatory insurance requirements come into force on July 1, 2026.
